I took the day off yesterday to cap today selections. Let me know what you think.
5 Units Wake Forest +3.5 -103
Chris Paul scored 21 points and Eric Williams added 17 as the fourth-ranked Demon Deacons posted a 78-63 victory over Clemson in their Atlantic Coast Conference home opener. Wake Forest (11-0, 7-3 ATS; R: 3-0 SU, ATS) extended its home winning streak to 24 games and only losses to Duke and Arizona mar the Texas (9-2 SU, 4-4 ATS; H: 8-1 SU, 3-3 ATS) record, whose biggest win has been over Providence. Depth is obviously the Longhorns' strength and no team in the Big 12 can go as deep. Against Providence, freshman P.J. Tucker scored a disputed basket as time expired in overtime as 16th-ranked Texas pulled out a 79-77 victory. The Longhorns (9-2 SU, 4-4 ATS H: 8-1 SU, 3-3 ATS) opened Big 12 play with an easy 79-57 win over Baylor this weekend, Brad Buckman with 16 points led the Longhorns. Wake has the ponies here, expect the Longhorns to go down in a cloud of dust.
5 Units Clemson +3.5 -110
As I thought, the top tiered teams in the ACC are going to be too much for Clemson to handle. Last time out, Wake Forest beat up Clemson 78-63 SU. Now they come Home to face Florida State (12-3 SU, 4-3 ATS). Clemson has had the kind of start that was expected at 7-6 SU (5-4 ATS). The trend is that Clemson just can’t match-up with the premier teams. Their losses have come against very strong opponents such as Wake Forest, Duke, Cincinnati, Purdue, and South Carolina. Florida State just does not fit into this premier category. NC State got by FSU at FSU 58-53 SU, the last game after a poor offensive showing by the Seminoles. Things should get easier as Clemson is out-rebounding FSU by 5 boards a game (38-33 rpg). Clemson is getting strong inside play from Junior Sharrod Ford (12 ppg, 8 rpg, 3 bpg). Strong inside play is everything on the Road and FSU just does not seem to have it. Tough to go against the better rebounding team.
5 Units Minnesota U -1 -110
Week two in Big-10 play. A tough game here for the Iowa Hawkeyes who lost to Northwestern 77-68 over the weekend. Defensively, Iowa allowed 15-of-28 (53.6 percent) from the field for Northwestern. Iowa's (8-4 SU, 4-6 ATS) Pierre Pierce had a game-high 23 points but also had five turnovers, and Greg Brunner also added 11 points. The Hawkeyes have a veteran squad that laid an egg against Northwestern due to a lack of defensive intensity. Minnesota (8-5 SU, 1-10 ATS; H: 8-1 SU, 1-6 ATS) is better than their 8-5 SU showing. Kris Humphries (23 ppg) has taken the place of Rick Rickert and might well be the Big-10 POY when all is said and done plus there is a strong cast of returnees. Saturday, Humphries had 21 points, eight rebounds and two blocks to lead Minnesota past Princeton 57-53. Adam Boone added 10 points -- all in the second half -- for the Gophers, who had lost three of their last four games, including the 75-72 loss to Penn State. The Gophers are real good at home and scored a 77-64 win a year ago at home over Iowa. Iowa will need their "A" game here!!!
